How do you become a dentist in Connecticut?

A license applicant who has graduated from dental school in the United States must comply with the eligibility criteria set out below:

• Candidate must graduate from an American Dental Association (ADA) accredited or recognized dental school;
• Complete an appropriate Regional Board Exam approved by the Connecticut State Dental Commission and Public Health Department. Approval is granted for the following regional exams:
• The Commission on Dental Competency Assessments (formerly NERB)
• Council of Interstate Testing Agencies
• Southern Regional Testing Agency
• Central Regional Dental Testing Service
• Western Regional Examining Board

All components of a regional board exam must be successfully completed by candidates; an overall passing score is not acceptable.

The diagnostic portion of the clinical performance test provided by the Commission on Dental Competency Assessments (formerly NERB) or the Council of Interstate Testing Agencies must also be passed by applicants who have successfully completed a clinical performance exam offered by the Central Regional Testing Service, the Southern Regional Testing Agency or the Western Regional Examining Board.

Applicants who have earned a dental degree through an ADA-accredited or recognized ADA program but failed the regional exam as stated above may be exempted from the regional exam, provided the candidate has completed at least one year of postgraduate dental education as a resident dentist in a program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CDA), provided that the supervising dentist confirms the competence of the resident dentist in all areas tested on the Commission on Dental Competency Assessments (formerly NERB). This exemption does not apply to dentists with foreign education.

What documents do you need to apply for a dental license in Connecticut?

• An official dental education transcript confirming the award of a dental degree sent directly from the school to that office;
• An official report on the results of the National Council sent directly to this office;
• A formal report on the successful completion of an acceptable clinical efficacy exam as outlined above. (The scores from the Commission on Dental Competency Assessments (formerly NERB) are submitted to this office. If the applicant’s participation in meeting this documentation requirement is necessary, he or she will be contacted);
• Applicants applying for an exemption from taking the regional board examination must arrange for the submission of a form for the Verification of Dental Residency Training.
• Verification of all licenses that have ever been held by the applicant (valid or expired) in each state or territory in which the applicant is or has ever received a license. Most states charge a fee to complete the form. Please check with each state or territory for information on fees.
